Interesting Facts about Bivalves

1.      You can find out the age of shells by counting the rings of their shells.

2.      Scallops are said to be slow growers and their life span is between 4 to 5 years.

3.      Most bivalves become males in their first year of development. Protandric Hermaphroditism occurs when some male bivalves grow older, they have sex changes becoming females. They have both male and female sex organs. Males can switch into females every year.

4.      Oysters release about a million eggs and at least one will survive.

5.      Some scallops have numerous eyes that help them locate predators.

6.      Molluscs can make pearls out of unfamiliar materials that flow into their shells. They use the lining of the shell to coat the materials. Some can make big pearls and others can make small. It is more costly when the pearls are big.

7.      The largest bivalve is the giant clam that weighs at 734 pounds.
